Greetings ~
There's a small house in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. To the passerby, it appears as a regular twinplex with an apartment at each side. It's a nice brick structure and would be easy to think that people live in it today. But the scope of the little building becomes known as you get closer to it and see the damage to the bricks and doors. This is no regular twinplex home.
In this house a 20-year old woman died. There was no break-in, no crazed prowler around the neighborhood. She didn't die in a freak accident. She died in battle. Yes! This woman died in a house in America and she died as a result of a battle. The battle was fought in Gettysburg and it took place, at this writing, 159-years ago during the Civil War.
During a three day siege of the city by Union and Confederate Armies, the air was thick with gunpowder smoke. People did not venture out of their homes in fear of being hit by straw bullets. But, as one young woman found out, home was not safe either.
This blog is about Jennie Wade. A young woman trying only to help her sister with a newborn baby and baking bread for the passing soldiers. No one knows where the bullet came from that killed Jennie. It passed through two doors to get to her. With all the commotion of the battle, Jennie Wade was the only citizen killed during the three day event.
This blog is dedicated to Jennie Wade. I hope she has been resting in peace for the last 159-years.
